Songwriting is at its core lyrics and melody.
If you can put those together while expressing your voice and perspective you'll become an original artist.
However, those that have been songwriting longer will see faster results.
Results will vary based on experience level, but you should have the bare bones of a full song in 24 to 72 hours depending on genre and the type of production with the possibility of a completed work in less than a week.
